The Rostock Gedser ferry without a car or with a bike

Yes, you can, and it is cheap: 15.50 euros return as a foot passenger, 3 euros more for a bike. The catch is not on the ship but before and after it: both terminals are a long way from the railway stations. Ticket and price for foot passengers

For Rostock Gedser, Scandlines sells a 1-day ticket for foot passengers for 15.50 euros, there and back on the same calendar day, valid for the departure you booked and every other departure that day. You can buy it online or at the port (scandlines.com, checked on 18 September 2026). The bike supplement of 3 euros is sold at the port.

In February 2025 the machine in Gedser showed the price in kroner: 110 DKK for adults in low season, 220 DKK in high season, children aged 5 to 13 half price, under 5 free. The machine speaks German. One of the two takes cards only, with a 2.8 percent fee for company cards and cards from outside the EU. Next to it is a unit that takes euro cash.

There are two notices at the machine in Gedser that you should know about. Tickets bought at the port are only valid on the day you buy them, and bike tickets only for the first departure after purchase. And anyone under 14 only travels with an adult.

If you only want to travel one way, for example on your way to Copenhagen, check in the booking which ticket Scandlines offers you for that. The one listed on the website is the 1-day ticket.

How it works in Rostock

From the main station to the port. The Überseehafen is on the other side of the river Warnow. The city bus stops at “Seehafen”, right by the ferry centre, and we saw line 19 there. Check the current connection with RSAG and allow a good 40 minutes. A taxi takes about 20 minutes.
Check-in at the ferry centre. At least 30 minutes before departure, at the machine or in the office. That is twice as early as in Gedser, so plan for it.
On board. Follow the signs for foot passengers in the ferry centre, and the staff will show you the way to the ship.

How it works in Gedser

In Gedser everything is in one building: the old railway station right by the port. A blue sign saying “Landgangspassagerer” points the way, and the car park for foot passengers is 200 metres further on. Inside you will find a waiting room, toilets, the ticket machines and a screen with the next departures. Check-in is open until 15 minutes before departure: scan your ticket at the speed gate, then take the stairs or the lift up to the gangway. A notice on the machine makes clear that you only buy there, you do not check in.

With a bike

The ferry is part of the Berlin Copenhagen long-distance cycle route and of EuroVelo 7. Cyclists check in like foot passengers and pay a 3 euro supplement. In Rostock the 30-minute rule applies to check-in with a bike as well.

In Gedser the way to the ferry has its own signs for cyclists, and just behind the port stands the signpost everybody photographs: 298 km to Copenhagen, 3,204 km to the North Cape. The first kilometres run flat across Falster to Nykøbing (around 25 km) or to the coast at Marielyst (around 20 km). In Rostock the cycle route runs from the port through the city and south towards Güstrow.

Door to door, that adds up to eight to nine hours from Berlin to Copenhagen, and around six from Rostock. The direct train via Hamburg is faster, but it costs more and comes without the sea air. The weak link in the chain is the bus in Gedser: it does not meet every ferry, so check the connection before you book.
