Motorhome, caravan or trailer on the Rostock Gedser ferry: will my vehicle fit?
The short answer: yes, almost everything fits, but the price depends on the length, and the measurement includes the bike rack and the drawbar. A vehicle registered as a motorhome travels at the car fare, whatever it weighs. Measuring the length: how Scandlines calculates
Scandlines uses five length bands. What counts is the total length from the front bumper to the last thing that sticks out at the back. Checked on scandlines.com on 18 September 2026.

- Everything attached to the vehicle is measured. Scandlines says so explicitly: bikes on a rear rack or a luggage box count towards the length. A 5.99-metre panel van with bikes on the back is no longer a 6-metre vehicle.
- Motorhomes travel at the car fare, however heavy they are. The condition: the vehicle is registered as a motorhome. The 3,500 kg limit that applies to cars and vans then does not matter.
- Vans count as cars if they are registered as a car and have no more than 9 seats, 3,500 kg and 6 metres.
- Scandlines does not publish the supplement as a fixed amount. It depends on the band, the fare and the season. Enter your real length in the booking and you will see the price. If the booked length is wrong, expect to pay the difference at check-in.
Height: what we saw at the ramp and on deck
We did not find an official height limit on the Scandlines website, so here is what is posted on site. At the boarding ramp in Gedser there is a sign saying 4.2 metres. On the car deck of the ferry Berlin, right behind the bow door, there is a sign saying 4.0 metres. We photographed both on 19 February 2025.
For normal motorhomes (mostly 2.8 to 3.3 metres) this is not an issue. It only gets tight with an overcab model plus a roof box, a satellite dish or kayaks on the roof. If you come close to 4 metres, ask Scandlines customer service before you book which deck tall vehicles are parked on.
The car deck itself is wide, bright and marked with blue lanes. The crew directs every vehicle into place. We did not have to manoeuvre: you drive in forwards through the bow and drive out forwards again at the other end.
Which ticket for a motorhome or a car with caravan
Low Price, the cheapest fare from 65.30 euros, applies to cars up to 6 metres according to Scandlines and is tied to exactly one departure. With a compact motorhome under 6 metres it is an option if your schedule is fixed. For anything longer, and for anyone with a long drive to the port, Standard (from 82.70 euros plus length supplement) is the sensible fare: if you miss your departure because the A19 is jammed, you take the next ferry with free space on the same day. With a caravan on the hook, that is exactly the most common problem.
In high season the spaces for long vehicles can sell out faster than those for cars. Book early for July and August and expect your preferred Saturday morning departure to be full. On weekdays and on the early and late departures there is almost always room.

Check-in and boarding with a long vehicle
Officially, checking in 15 minutes before departure is enough. With a caravan or trailer you should be there 45 minutes ahead: you are directed into a waiting lane and have time to calmly pack everything you need for the crossing. In Gedser the E55 leads straight to the check-in booths, in Rostock you follow the signs “Fährcenter Gedser” through the Überseehafen port area. Both approaches are wide and have no tight bends, so they are easy with a caravan.
- Turn off the gas before you drive on board. That is standard on ferries.
- Handbrake on, in gear, alarm off. In a swell, motion sensors tend to go off.
- Take everything upstairs with you: you cannot go back to the car deck during the crossing. That includes what is in the fridge and the dog food.
- For two hours the fridge runs on 12 volts only, or not at all. For this short crossing that is not a problem.
Driving on through Denmark: what matters for campers
There are no tolls between Gedser and Copenhagen. If you continue to Sweden, you pay by length on the Øresund Bridge: vehicles from 6 to 10 metres cost 940 DKK at the toll station and 840 DKK online (price list from 14 September 2026), twice the price of a car. This is where a comparison with a combination ticket and with the Helsingør Helsingborg ferry really pays off.

FAQ motorhome and trailer
What does the Rostock Gedser ferry cost with a motorhome?
Up to 6 metres in length the car fare applies, on 17 September 2026 from 65.30 euros (Low Price) or 82.70 euros (Standard) for a single crossing. Above that, a length supplement is added per band, which you will see in the booking once you enter your real length.
Does the bike rack count towards the vehicle length?
Yes. Scandlines counts everything mounted on the vehicle, and explicitly mentions bikes on the back and luggage boxes.
Is there a different fare for heavy motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes?
No, as long as the vehicle is registered as a motorhome. Scandlines charges motorhomes the car fares plus the length band, regardless of weight.
How tall can my vehicle be?
On site, the signs say 4.2 metres at the ramp in Gedser and 4.0 metres on the car deck. We did not find an official figure on the Scandlines website. From about 3.8 metres you should check with customer service.
Do I have to turn off the gas?
Yes, gas bottles are closed before boarding. The car deck is locked during the crossing.
Can I just turn up at the port with a caravan?
Outside the holidays usually yes, but at the port price, which is well above the online price. It is better to book on your phone on the way, as soon as you know which departure you will make.
